Joining Foundations and Fabric

To join foundations to fabric squares, pin the fabric square to the foundation, right sides together. With the foundation side facing up, sew on the line. It is not necessary to machine baste first.

When assembling the paper units, fabric squares, and fabric borders, most of the time you will have a line on the foundation to sew on. However, occasionally there may be a short distance where there is no foundation and therefore no sewing line. In order to keep your ¼” seam allowance consistent, place four layers of masking tape ¼” to the right of the needle to create a sewing guide.

Pressing Seam Allowances

The general rule about pressing seam allowances is to press them in opposing directions. Always press from the fabric side of the block and do not put the iron on the paper side of the foundation because it will smear the ink on the foundation. When making the 9-patch star block using foundations for the four points, press the seam allowances toward the fabric squares.
